t this very moment there is a women’s movement that is truly stirring all over the globe. In science, entertainment, technology, fashion, business, and any other industry that you can imagine. Socially, women are becoming more and more outspoken and free in claiming who they are and what they want for themselves. Right now, there has been a social media movement in women sharing using the hashtag #MeToo. This hashtag is women who are standing up to be counted among those who have been sexually harassed or assaulted. Women have been sharing stories on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, you name it. All baring some of their deepest and darkest pains and struggles. It isn’t like we didn’t know that this despicable behavior had been going on, but recent events surrounding the movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and so many women speaking out about being silent victims for so long has stirred the pot. This is a conversation like so many that needs to be had. Over the past year there have been a number of other high profile individuals and corporations have had a light shown on them and their activities in regard to the mistreatment and abuse of girls and women.
America Ferrera shared a part of her story with the world saying, “I told no one and lived with the shame and guilt thinking all along that I, a 9-year-old child, was somehow responsible for the actions of a grown man.”
“For 20 years now, I’ve been trying to tell my story as honestly as possible and basically with the goal of never having to hear, ‘Me too’ ever again,” Union said today on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “And I talk about that in my book so it was so wild the other night to see #MeToo trending.”
The mistreatment of girls and women should not, cannot, and will not be tolerated. Women have to know that the entire community stands with them when it comes to abuse. Women have to know that their voices will be heard at all ages. Girls the ages of 5, 8, 15, 25, 55, and hell, 95 have to know that those responsible will not get away with this abuse. There are too many young girls and women who have had to endure these traumatic experiences, endure the hurt, the objectification, the judgement, and unfair shame that has unfortunately kept them from speaking out. Like most things that plague our world we cannot just speak up, we must speak out about them in any way we can. In this case, we must raise awareness for this struggle just like we do our favorite television show or movie premiere.
Women everywhere should know that those who may have not been abused will stand with them. It is outrageous the number of men and women who standing up and saying #metoo. The fact that so many have been harassed or assaulted continues to be unsettling, knowing that so many of our mothers, wives, sisters, and friends have been through this . Here at New Age Threads we will continue to do our part in saying that WE TOO will stand with the girls and woman of this country, the world over, in solidarity against sexual harassment and assault of all kinds. We don’t want anyone else to have to say #metoo. No more victim shaming, no more victim blaming.
